International NanoSIMS Workshop 2008
An international workshop to develop and promote nanoSIMS science will be held as a satellite meeting to ACMM-20 (see event below). This is a unique opportunity to see and discuss research opportunities with nanoSIMS scientists from all around the globe.
Individuals interested in the Cameca 1280 ion microprobe to be purchased by UWA shortly, will also find this workshop of interest. Researchers, students and industry representatives are all encouraged to attend, and numerous bursaries are available.
If you are an ECR or student, this is your last opportunity to
register for free!
We encourage all eligible registrants who truly require funding
assistance to apply for a bursary ASAP.
Please check the workshop website for all updates.

20th Australian Conference on Microscopy & Microanalysis (ACMM-20),
4th Congress of the International Union of Microbeam Analysis Societies (IUMAS-IV)
The Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis, AMMRF node at the University of Western Australia, is playing a major role in hosting the 20th Australian Conference on Microscopy & Microanalysis (ACMM-20),
4th Congress of the International Union of Microbam Analysis Societies (IUMAS-IV). This bi-annual conference will offer symposia on core and emerging microscopies supported by relevant workshops and short courses. The strong training component of the program highlights the organiser's commitment to supporting students and early career microscopists.
Date: 10–15 February 2008.
Venue: Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
2008 International Conference On Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN 2008)
ICONN 2008 will bring together the Australian and International community (students, scientists and engineers from academia, govt. laboratories and industry) working in the field of nanoscale science and technology to discuss new and exciting advances in the field. ICONN 2008 will cover nanostructure growth, synthesis, fabrication, characterisation, device design, modeling, fabrication, testing and applications. The AMMRF with exhibit at the conference in cooperation with the Australian National Fabrication Facility Ltd.
Date: 25-29 February 2008.
Venue: Melbourne Convention Centre.

“Brain, Mind and Mental Illness”
Mental illness such as clinical depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and others affect 1.5 million Australians and account for 45% of the illnesses that GPs see annually
across the nation. The drive to alleviate this suffering and understand the role of the brain in these illnesses has created a vast amount of knowledge, particularly since the 1950’s when chemical compounds were found to alleviate symptoms in some
patients. Advances in techniques for brain research such as molecular neurobiology and non-invasive brain imaging have highlighted the extreme complexity of the structure and processes of the brain but in effect relatively little progress in ameliorating mental illness has been made.
