AFM imaging: Interactions between the probe and sample
A plot of this upward and downward motion (z), as a function of the tip x - y position on the sample surface, provides a high-resolution image of the surface topography.

Introduction
The most impressive feature of this new type of microscope is the extremely high spatial resolution of the order of 0.
Near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM/SNOM)
In either approach, the aperture at the bottom of the waveguide is less than the diffraction limit, and hence this approach provides a method to get around the resolution limits of standard optical microscopy.
Non-contact mode
Non-contact mode AFM works best under ultra-high vacuum conditions and then atomic scale resolution is possible.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM)
The unique aspect of STM is that is can readily be used to acquire images with atomic resolution which is not generally true for the other SPMs.
